Basenji Quilt Raffle
The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, in St. Louis, MO, will be having a quilt exhibit from Sept 16 - Dec 21, 2001. All the quilts in the exhibit have been created specifically for a canine fundraising auction or raffle.
The basenji quilt will be on display during the exhibit, and a raffle held by the Basenji Club of America, at the 2001 National Specialty in St Louis. The BCOA will donate all the money to the Basenji Health Endowment, a worthwhile cause that benefits all basenjis.
Basenji lovers: note the dates of the exhibit. Our national specialty this year is in St. Louis, Sept 23 - 30, so if you are planning on attending, try to find time to visit the museum.
Quilt Information
The quilt measures 77" wide, by 89" long (big enough for a 8-9" drop on a queen size mattress). It has a lightweight batting, so is suitable for hanging (there is a rod pocket on the back), as a bed cover, or as a sofa throw. It is machine washable, gentle cycle. There is no hand quilting on this quilt, it was all done by machine. (we only decided to participate in Feb, 2001, certainly not enough time for hand quilting!)
It is quite detailed, with 727 pieces of fabric making up the top. The four basenji colors mentioned in the standard are represented, as well as the basenji's versatility (conformation, agility, obedience, lure coursing, and mighty squirrel hunter). Also included is the Egyptian lotus, an ancient symbol of re-birth. It is hoped the Basenji Endowment Fund will insure the continuation of our beloved breed as a healthy hunter and companion.
The
quilt will be going to various shows throughout the midwest (with
creator Vickie Perrine) during the summer and can be seen in the
museum exhibit after Sept 16.
Pictures
of the quilt, along with fabric samples, have been sent to all the
BCOA affiliated clubs
Raffle Information
The quilt will be raffled, with the winner being drawn at the National in St. Louis.
The
tickets are $1.00 each, or 6 for $5.00, and will be available
starting May 19, 2001.
They
can be purchased by mail: Carole Kirk, 383 Princess Circle,
Versailles, KY, 40383. If you'd like your ticket stubs mailed to you,
enclose a self addressed stamped envelope. (Thanks to Carole for
generously offering to handle this. She did such a great job with the
raffle to benefit Kari!)
Mail purchases must be postmarked by Tuesday, September 18, 2001.
Checks should be made out to: BCOA
Tickets may also be purchased at the National in September.
Note: though the drawing will be held at the National, the winner will not receive the quilt until Jan, 2002. It must stay in the museum for the duration of the exhibit.
Of course, most of the tickets sold are being bought by basenji owners. But you do not have to own a basenji to buy tickets. Wouldn't this quilt make a great gift for your basenji owning friend? Don't have a friend with a basenji? You could sell the quilt (ebay?) and donate the money to your favorite breed charity!
